Is 'Protecting Kids Online' Worth It?

In an effort to protect kids online from social media apps, Texas has passed legislation requiring Apple and Google app stores to verify ages by obtaining parental identification for all users under 18. Naturally, Apple has opposed this; Google has refused to comment so far.

According to Apple, this law forces the collection of "sensitive personal identifying information for every Texan who wants to download an app, even if it's an app that simply provides weather updates or sports scores."

The Privacy Dilemma:

☝️ Mass Data Collection Risk - Should every Texas resident surrender personal identification to download an app?

☝️ False Security - Kids can still access social media through web browsers, and this law does not affect apps that are already installed, like TikTok or Instagram.

☝️ Security Gaps - Age verification applies only to app stores, not direct platform access, leaving potential for security loopholes

Are we trading fundamental privacy rights for a vast array of people in order to protect a vulnerable group? Is the Texan approach the most effective method for protecting kids online?

Some argue for pivoting the attention to teaching responsible digital literacy for children rather than restricting their access to technology. Most children today are avid social media users with the apps already available on their phones.

Is digital literacy the most effective answer?
