'Of Course They're Listening' - Apple To Pay $95M In Siri Snooping Settlement

In January Apple agreed to resolve their 5 year-long class action lawsuit. This involves allegations that Siri was being used to record conversations through iPhones and other devices equipped with the feature for longer than a decade.

Although they are settling for 95 million dollars, Apple is not acknowledging any wrongdoing. The court did not decide in favour of the plaintiffs or Apple. Instead, both sides seemed to agree to a settlement, avoiding the costs and risks of a trial. Affected settlement class members may be able to get benefits or compensation, according to news outlets.

Where do you fit in? If you think you have been affected, the deadline to file a claim is the 7th of July 2025. US users can claim up to 20 dollars per Siri enabled device.

The case highlights how passive data collection without clear consent remains a legal and reputationally contentious area.

To avoid litigation under GDPR, here are critical actions EU businesses must take:

- Minimise passive data collection

- Ensure informed and active consent

- Maintain robust data logs and audit trails
